The minimum age for driving in Spain is eighteen, and remember that Spanish law requires all occupants in the car to wear a seat belt, and no child under twelve years old is allowed to travel in the front of a vehicle unless they are in a specially adapted rear-facing seat for infants.
When you are purchasing fuel for your hire car leaded petrol is usually sold as super/super 97, and unleaded as sin plomo 98 or Eurosuper 95. Diesel is called gasoleo. In the more rural parts of Spain you can drive for many kilometres without seeing a garage, so do not let your tank get too low
Radar speed traps are very common here , and on the spot fines (which must be paid in cash) can be heavy. If oncoming vehicles flash their headlights at you it often means that there is a speed trap ahead.
In recent years there has been a huge road-building programme here and the motorways (autopistas) are now amongst the best in Europe. Most of the best roads attract tolls (autopistas de peajes), and the charge for using them can be quite expensive.
This means that the motorways are often uncrowded , with the non-toll roads leading to the same destination being very busy. So if you want to drive long distances quickly as possible the motorway network is the best answer. But if you are not in a hurry and want to save money you will be better off using the dual-carriageway roads (autovias) that are prefixed with an E.
One useful feature on dual carriageways if you miss your turn off is the sign “cambio de sentido”, which means that ahead is an under or over pass where you can turn round.
