Murcia enjoys a semi-arid Mediterranean climate with more than 2,800 hours of sunshine each year and an average annual temperature of 19.3ºC. It offers approximately 325 sunny days each year, and this generous amount of sunshine, combined with the region’s long coastline and over 50 kms of the strip of coast known as La Manga del Mar Menor, have made it a favourite holiday destination for domestic and international travellers.
The climate on the Mar Menor is reputed to be one of the healthiest in the world according to the World Health Organization. It has an average annual temperature of 18ºC and around 320 days sun every year and very little rain.
The winters are very mild with temperatures rarely falling below 10ºC, but be warned rthey can reach 30ºC in August.
Very hot with little to no rainfall and temperatures reaching between 25ºC-35ºC.
In August the weather in Murcia can be unbearably hot with temperatures some days reaching more than 40ºC. As the coastline is about 45 km away from the city centre, the fresh wind from the sea hardly reaches this area during the summer.
The distance to the sea and the relief causes thermal differences between the coast and the interior – mainly in winter. While on the coast the temperature rarely falls below 10ºC, inland it does not usually rise above 6ºC and the precipitation level is higher (up to 600 mm).
The temperature is still very mild compared to northern Europe with mostly clear and sunny days. The temperatures can vary greatly and reach over 20ºC one day but drop down to 6ºC overnight.
Murcia is (together with Almeria) the driest area of Spain. Even during the winter months there is not much rain in Murcia and rain is scarce throughout the region (approx. 300-350 mm/year), falling mainly in April and October. The exception is when Murcia experiences a “Gota Fria” when the temperature suddenly drops and there is incredible torrential rain and flooding.
